| Introduction Any slight disturbance of the plant life growing on a fragile sand dune, such as straying off the path, can develop into a blow-out. This is devastating for the plants that have worked hard to colonise that particular area but at the same time it is one of the essential characteristics of a mobile sand dune system. On many sand dunes around the coast of Britain management has seen the placing of fences around areas which are thought to be in need of protection from the ambling of man.
